Let’s keep it simple…
Last month (February 2018) the Valencian government made an amendment to the law in the province to opening hours on Sundays and public holidays here on the Costa Blanca. This means large retailers and shopping centres like La Zenia Boulevard on the Orihuela Costa and Habaneras in Torrevieja, along with supermarkets including Lidl and Carrefour can only open their stores on a Sunday or a public holiday up to 40 times during each year.
The change in this law does not affect restaurants, pubs, cafes who are able to trade as normal along with recreational amenities like the cinema or bowling for example.
The following is a list of dates when the retail shops in La Zenia Boulevard shopping centre are closed. It is likely that your local shopping mall or supermarket will follow a similar timetable.
Dates closed as of 20 March 2018:
April – 15, 22, 29
May – 1, 6, 13, 20, 27
June – 3, 10
October – 9
December – 25
The busy months of July, August and September are not affected and the shops will be open on a Sunday as normal. For those of taking your holidays during this period there is still no need to worry about the time or day so leave the watches and phones at home!
